Pine Pollen and Pine Cones

Did you know, Pine trees generate their seeds in cones. For most pines, the time to seed maturity in two years. Cones begin to form in summer, by the next spring the conelet begins to be visible. As pollen season begins, the conelet creates a sticky, sugary solution in its ovules, which is then sent to tips of the scales. Once air-borne, pollen is caught in the sticky solution. Once pollen grains are caught, the pollen is absorbed and the scales close. The pollen stays dormant until the next spring. Once fertilization takes place, the cones begin to rapidly increase in size as the seeds go through their developmental stages. Seeds mature within the cones by late summer, with the weight increasing by 40 times!
